Use Your Scraps – Diagonal Slice is the second in a series of card layouts encouraging you to use up your scraps.  We all have scraps of paper, card stock, stamped images that we didn't use.  This series is made to help you use them up!  You can see the first post in the series here.  That post explores a Spiral Background.

The Card

One of the best things about this technique is you get to create two cards at once.  Here they are –

two cards from one diagonal slice

The joy of this technqiue is that it creates two cards.  You will use two layers starting out at 4 1/4″ by 5″ and then after slicing them you'll have four pieces.  Follow the directions below to put the four pieces together to create two unique cards.

Let's Make It

Now let's make this elegant birthday card.  If you're a crafter that likes to copy exactly down to the 1/8″ I've included the dimensions below as well.

  1. Fold and burnish the score line for the Basic White card base
  2. Stamp the greeting on a scrap of Basic White and crop it with the corresponding small rectangle die – watch to make sure the greeting is towards the top of the rectangle
  3. Snip the ends off the 2 1/4″ by 3/8″ at a matching angle then use Multipurpose Liquid Glue (glue) to attach it to the cropped basic white layer
  4. Make the Diagonal Slice:
    1. This technique relies on  your paper being double-sided
    2. Take the two sheets and put one of the matching patterns in the middle.  In other words if lay the papers side by side with the matching patterns showing, then flip the paper on the right to lay on top of the paper on the left
    3. Cut the stack of papers on the diagonal from about 1″ below the upper right corner to about 1″ above the upper left corner
    4. Now reassemble the 5 1/4″ by 4″ layers with the angles matching with one pattern on the top of the other on the bottom
  5. Glue the two papers the 4″ by 5 1/4″ computer paper
  6. Add the piece of Gold Foil down the seam of the papers.  Trim the excess
  7. Glue the papers and foil to the Moody Mauve layer
  8. Add the greeting layer with Stampin' Dimensionals towards the bottom of the card
  9. Add a couple of Moody Mauve dots below the greeting layer

Dimensions and Measurements

  • Basic White – 8 1/2 by 5 1/2″ score at 4 1/4″
  • Basic White scrap at least 3″ by 1 1/2″
  • Moody Mauve – 5 3/8″ by 4 1/8″
  • (2) Fresh As a Daisy DSP from same sheet – each 5 1/4″ by 4″
  • Scrap of Fresh as a Daisy DSP – at least 2 1/2″ by 3/8″
  • Gold Foil – 1/8″ by at least 7″
